Graham should be in the Guinness World Records for visiting more record shops than any other person. Following hundreds of record shop closures, he toured the UK to interview the owners and staff of 50 record shops and document their tales for his book Last Shop Standing: Whatever Happened to Record Shops? For the last five years he has been writing The Vinyl Revival and the Shops That Made it Happen, a guide to independent record shops in the UK that sell new vinyl. We’re delighted he’s a ‘Book of the Month’ Author (October 2018) and to have been part of his launch activities with a highly successful evening Book Event at Beatons Petersfield.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

In 1906 in turn-of-the century Boston, a small, esoteric book about tea was written with the intention of being read aloud in the famous salon of Isabella Gardner, Boston's most famous socialite. Authored by Kakuzo Okakura , a Japanese philosopher, art expert and curator. Little known at the time, Kakuzo would emerge as one of the great thinkers of the early 20th century, a genius who was insightful, witty and greatly responsible for bridging Western and Eastern cultures. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-pagination: none;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri";">T<span lang="en-GB" style="font-size: 11pt;">aught at a young age to speak English, he was more than capable of expressing to Westerners the nuances of tea and the Japanese Tea Ceremony. In The Book of Tea he discusses such topics as Zen and Taoism, but also the secular aspects of tea and Japanese life. The book emphasizes how Teaism taught the Japanese many things; most importantly, simplicity. Kakuzo argues that tea-induced simplicity affected the culture, art and architecture of Japan. Nearly a century later, Kakuzo's The Book of Tea is still beloved the world over, making it an essential part of any tea enthusiast's collection. </span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "calibri";"></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-pagination: none;">
<span lang="en-GB" style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11.0pt;">This is a most delightful book for anybody who is interested in Japanese esthetics, inherent in their traditional art of living. The text sheds light on many different aspects of Japanese creation, sensitivity towards nature and the culminating sense of the sublime which human beings can achieve. The principles seem to have travelled through centuries of war and catastrophes and remain intact. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-pagination: none;">
<span lang="en-GB" style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 11.0pt;"> A gentle yet powerful breath of air, full of awareness for human nature. The essence of the philosophies is still valid in today's Japan and are soothing in the present state of the globe. Interwoven with a rich history of Japanese tea and its place in Japanese society is poignant commentary on Asian culture and our ongoing fascination with it, as well as illuminating essays on art, spirituality, poetry, and more. The Book of Tea is a delightful cup of enlightenment from a man far ahead of his time.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you like biography you will probably warm to this novel
because its characters feel so absolutely ‘real’. It weaves a complex
multi-layered melody over the course of three ‘books’ within one. Set initially
in in Africa it moves across frontiers with key protagonist, Jennie as she’s
uprooted from her home and family caught in the midst of political turmoil. She
eventually lands in London and finds herself in a women’s commune. </span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is the story of a naive and sensitive young woman who learns much about
herself, relationships and music during her many adventures. Far less about
dance than it is about music, Molteno is clearly a master of her subjects:
Africa, politics, musical semantics and most of all the fickle and fathomless
arena of human emotions. All our senses are engaged, ears most of all since
this is a dialogue rich story in which we hear what lies beneath the words with
painful clarity. I have been introduced to a plethora of new musical
instruments and forms: the shehnai, tabla and mbira (I even looked up and
listened to some African Mbira music while I was reading – definitely added the
right tone!)</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The writing is lyrical and poetic and often sentences are left open-ended as if
the stave has produced a rest which we must all take. I liked this for the most
part, although lovers of a ‘racy story’ may find its meandering rhythms and
movements a bit slow. I decided to follow its lead and took it gently. And it
grew on me until I realised I had no choice but to be drawn to its conclusion
which wasn’t exactly where I wanted to go, but which probably makes it a much
more true reflection on ‘real life’.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Marion Molteno is one of our newly discovered Tisbury

either won or been short-listed for awards. <i>‘If

publishers have reissued it, which alone says something for its quality. </span></div>

lovers see in each other (clue: Book 2, Chapter 4) which is one of the most
beautiful pieces of prose about love I have ever read. So, for those thinking
ahead to February this might make an extremely good Valentine’s gift. And for
any music-lover, I echo the words of a review on the back cover <i>‘Anyone interested in a new way of thinking
about music should read this novel.’</i></span></div>

music collection which (until a year ago) topping 12 hrs listening time max and having been
into less than half a dozen record shops in my lifetime! But I love people, and
so does Graham Jones. And I love good writing too. This is the perfect book for
a Guest Room or the resting place of the best collections of books – the Loo.
Its even made me want to visit some of these glorious independents, each with
their own quirky owners!</span></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><br style="line-height: 18.48px; position: static; width: auto;" />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.48px; position: static; width: 556px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.48px; position: static; width: 556px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I suspect it’ll have you exploring new place to meet the
characters you’ll encounter through its incredible 345 pages. <br />
<br />
Sadly, we won’t be able to meet Margaret Finch who the premises of the ‘Book
and Record Bar’ in West Norwood was originally named after in its first
incarnation as a pub, The Gypsy Queen. Ms Finch <i>‘could usually be found sitting
on the ground, chin resting on her knees, smoking a pipe, with her faithful dog
by her side… Her body became so contorted that when she died in 1740, she had
to be crammed into a specially-constructed square coffin.’</i> [Reputed age 108!]
Curious. And for the music-lover you’ll be enchanted by anecdote after anecdote
about the musicians who populate your record collections.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.48px; position: static; width: 556px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.48px; position: static; width: 556px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There’s humour in buckets, too. Especially from the customer
comments and conversations Graham Jones has carefully preserved. No doubt many
of the shops he features will be bemused by their colleagues’ visitors.
<i>Questions such as, ‘Where is the plug on a wind-up gramophone?’, ‘Are the
records for sale?’ and ‘How do I skip to the next track on vinyl?’ are bound to
raise a smile. </i>I’m still leafing through to discover the shop where John Lennon
was reduced to tears…</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.48px; position: static; width: 556px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br />
This is a practical guide, grouped into counties with addresses, contact
details and stock listed, along with a plethora of tips. Unusually for a large
paperback it boasts some stunning colour photographs. You will be guided by a
remarkable man on a mission, Graham Jones has visited more record shops than
any other human!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><br /></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.48px; position: static; width: 556px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What’s more, Graham’s is a born raconteur who isn’t afraid
to sell himself or his titles. He invited himself to do an evening gig at
Beatons Petersfield which Tearooms Owner Fifi has been delighted to organise
for her customers! <span style="color: magenta;"><u><a href="http://bit.ly/2xecqM8-book" style="color: black; text-decoration: underline;">Read more here</a></u></span>.</span><br />

probably made it too heavy for taking with you on your travels. Small matter, a magnifier will redress.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.48px; position: static; width: 556px;">

who treats ‘facts’ with healthy suspicion and unhealthy dread, I am an unlikely
fan of <i>‘Wilding’</i> by Isabella Tree.
But when a book sparkles with literary flair, passion and insight after insight
relevant to ‘the common man or woman’ it is bound to be compelling. It is book
to treasure and I shall certainly re-read it in a more leisurely fashion than reviewing
permits.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">However, this review starts with an odd request: skip the
intro and read it as a reminder of the journey accomplished when you’ve reached
the end. Head straight for Chapter 1 to meet a remarkable tree man – Ted Green
– and a couple facing a mountain of unpalatable facts. From there you’ll be drawn swiftly into the
story of the re-wilding of the Knepp Estate told with searing honesty and
humility. Seeded with humour <i>‘Wilding’</i>
presents a harvest of knowledge from the earth beneath your feet whilst
constantly drawing you skywards to feast your eyes on turtle doves, the yaffle
(Sussex name for a green woodpecker) nightingale and rare butterflies. Enter
the world of Knepp – it enlightened and enchanted me. It also made my heart
ache at our arrogance and refusal to learn from nature herself.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

interested in the future of agriculture and the land but for those worried
about the ‘extinction of experience’. It is a salutary thought to consider that
40% of children never play outdoors at all. <i>‘Wilding’
</i>also challenges myths about Britain’s ecological history with logic
and evidence dug out of peat and sharp observation, revising my picture of a
forested Britain in favour of wooded pasture inhabited by grazing animals. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

This review comes from me on holiday, on the outskirts of Edinburgh supporting a friend performing at the Edinburgh Festival. No shortage of junior book-worms as you can see! <br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: magenta;"><i>'Wizzy and the Seaside Adventure' </i></span></b>is about Dan, who has a rather strange friend - Wizzy! He's a highly opinionated and automated wheelchair who is more than the sum of his parts. Together friends, James and Sophie he and Dan (not forgetting Honey the labrador for some four-legged intelligence) a thrilling seaside adventure unfolds.<br />
<br />
It would be tempting to tell you more about author Anthony Ridgway's achievement in writing 'the Wizzy books' - this is his second - but that would treat him differently to any other author, something I don't think Wizzy would approve of. <span style="color: magenta;"><b><i>So, with my professional reviewer's hat on - and the smiles of my neighbour's children to urge me on, here's a big thumbs up for</i></b></span> <span style="color: magenta;"><b><i>'Wizzy and the Seaside Adventure'.</i></b></span><br />
<br />
This is a book made for reading out loud. Wizzy's words are helpfully printed in a bright blue font. Expect all the 'ooos' and 'yuks' that children love as you romp into the seaside village of Haven and encounter thieves and... I daren't share more or I'll spoil the fun.<br />
<br />
I can tell you that with Wizzy, Dan's and even Honey's powers of detection and deduction the baddies had better watch out¬<br />
<br />
Every page of 'Wizzy and the Seaside Adventure' is charmingly illustrated. The coloured drawings by talented artist Suzan Houching will enchant young, old and all those in between.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: magenta;"><b>This is a story six-year olds and upwards will want to read more than once.</b></span> I hope number three of the Wizzy stories is in the pipeline.<br />

<b><span style="color: magenta; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tony Flannagan's first children's book is recommended for children from eight to twelve but I’d
say from eight to eighty! To be honest, the title slightly put me off as it reminded
me of a nursery rhyme which never much appealed (I’m a bit serious for dishes
running away with spoons…) But this is pure magic which girls and boys in that
difficult time of growing up will warm to, especially if they like the weird
and bizarre.</span></b></div>

with an ear for dialogue (and humour).</span></div>

</span><span lang="en-US" style="color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay is the perfect summer read. It's light hearted and has an engaging plot with lovable characters – but don't be mistaken, this book has substance. We follow twenty five year-old Rosa embarking on a journey of self discovery with the help of her best friend Josh and side kick dog – Hot; when out of nowhere she is left a corner shop in a small village called Cockleberry Bay, Devon. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span lang="en-US" style="color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Nicola has managed to perfectly capture what it's like to be someone in their twenties, making lead character Rosa incredibly easy to relate to, almost to a point where you feel as if you're reading your own story. With ups and downs along the way, Rosa's story is completely captivating, and you can't help but keep turning the page to see what she'll do next. </span></span></div>

We follow school boy and lead character, Leon on his journey dealing with the death of his twin brother, an estranged family and a boy called Arnold who doesn't communicate like his peers. In the way that true masters of their craft do with apparent effortlessness, Rob is able to allow the reader to become Leon and travel along his journey with him on the emotional roller-coaster of a weekend when Arnold comes to stay. With unusual experiences and new discovery's, Lucky Break is a touching novel that will appeal to everyone and well worth a read. </span></span></span></span></div>
