'Rise' by Gill
McEvoy, Cinnamon Press
It's a truism that our greatest contributions to the world
are usually born out of surmounting difficulties. The same rings true for great
poetry - literary juice wrung out of sudden change or tragedy.
Much of award-winning Cheshire poet Gill
McEvoy's collection 'Rise' is prompted by her coming to to terms with being
diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2000. As she looks to nature and her immediate
surroundings with sharpened senses she finds the joy of the moment and inspiration.
The collection drips with sensitivity, pithy insight and depth. With an eagle-sized wingspan, 'Rise' effortlessly
soars through all weathers of emotions demonstrating life is more visceral when
we dare to encounter them.
This is a must for all writers - especially poets -
wishing to acquire the art of 'less is more' and a read to give rise to your
wings, no matter how dry or dreary the view.
Gill McEvoy runs a monthly 'Poetry Breakfast' at Beatons Chester from 9.30 to 10.30 am usually on the first Monday of the month. Poets and/or poetry lovers are invited to share a poem on a particular
theme: they've covered the subjects of snow and ice and even machinery! It's become a popular local literary
event - visitors welcome. Cost £6.50 including light breakfast. Gill is also the 2015 winner of the prestigious Michael Marks Award for her Happenstance Press Pamphlet 'The First Telling', another brave volume gently peeling back the layers of the aftermath of rape. We feel honoured to have her as one of our Cheshire authors.
